Venture capital (VC) is a new asset class in many emerging markets and has the potential to achieve development at scale. Using a new European Union-sponsored firm-level longitudinal dataset, we assess the impact of government-managed (GVC) and independent venture capital (IVC) funds on the sales and employee growth of European high-tech entrepreneurial firms. Econometric estimates from a matching model support our predictions. We test these predictions using a sample of 759 young life science firms and 555 VC investors. These effects are stronger in the first financing round than in follow-on rounds, as the (positive and negative) informational value of patents protecting radical inventions diminishes over time as information asymmetries between young firms and prospective VC investors are reduced. Reputable VC investors are attracted to the strong quality signals of patents protecting radical inventions and are better able than other VC investors to deal with the dark side of these signals through syndication. We argue that whether firms that send such signals are attractive investment targets for venture capital (VC) investors depends on the characteristics of the investors. These previously disregarded signals convey positive and negative information simultaneously, i.e., strong signals that have a dark side. We study patents that protect radical inventions associated with high earnings potential but also a high risk of failure. Patents are an important signal of the unobserved quality of young, innovative firms. ![]() ![]() ![]() Increasing fishing and hunting, which reduces species populations of the exploited species. This, in turn, can decrease species populations, geographic ranges, biodiversity, and alter interactions among organisms. Without increased investment in voluntary international family planning programs and other initiatives that correlate with lower fertility (child survival, girls’ education, women’s empowerment, formal sector employment, etc.), we could be looking at a situation where the next couple milestones are crossed earlier than currently projected. ![]() The United Nations Population Division projects that the world will reach 9 billion people in 2037 and 10 billion in 2058. ![]() When Will the Population Reach 9 Billion? The more people who need food, water, shelter, health care, education, and employment, the more our agricultural systems, human institutions, and public infrastructure will need to grow and the more the environment and other species feel the strain. Consumption levels vary by individual and by world region, but everyone has infrastructure needs and contributes to environmental degradation to some degree. The steep ascent over the past two centuries has created growing pains for families, communities, countries, and the planet. The growth of the human population over time can be depicted by what is known as the population j-curve, which shows how sharply our population has risen in the last 200+ years. In fact, 96% of global population growth since the 7 billion milestone has occurred in less developed countries. Most of the growth around the world occurs in less developed countries-places already struggling to provide for their citizens, especially in the midst of the climate crisis (which has been disproportionately caused by people in high-income countries). The UN projects that it will take 15 years to reach the 9 billion mark and 21 more years to reach 10 billion. The last several billion milestones (4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 billion) were reached in 14, 13, 11, 12, and 12 years, respectively. It took 123 years to reach 2 billion, and only 33 years to reach 3 billion. When Did the World Population Reach Other Milestones? With more people surviving to adulthood and then having kids of their own, the human population started growing exponentially. The drop in mortality while fertility remained unchanged caused the beginning of what is now known as the J-curve (see below). Modern medicine and sanitation played heavily in reducing mortality rates-especially among infants and children-but there wasn’t yet a reliable way to reduce fertility (the first modern contraceptive, the birth control pill, wasn’t introduced until 1960). In fact, it took all of human history, until around 1804, to reach 1 billion people. Until the Industrial Revolution began, birth rates and death rates were both very high, which kept the global human population relatively stable. When Did the World Population Reach 1 Billion? After passing the 7 billion milestone in 2010, it has only taken 12 years to add the latest billion. We will become a world of 8 billion in 2022. ![]() ![]() Temuulen aka "Temka," 28, who plays the Mongolian guitar, says their international popularity was something they expected - but not in the millions. In throat singing, associated with pastoral herders in Central Asia, the singer produces a low constant sort of drone at the same time as a series of higher tones. It produces a sound similar to a violin and can be used to imitate the sound of a herd of horses. The two-stringed horsehead fiddle is shaped to resemble a horse and includes the carving of a horse head and strings and bow made of horsehair. Mongolian musical culture is tied up with their pastoral way of life. For the album, the idea was to find, study and incorporate as much of Mongolia's musical culture as they could into a rock style, says the band's 52-year-old producer and songwriter, B. They plan to call it Gereg, the name for a diplomatic passport used during the time of Genghis Khan. The Hu call their style "hunnu rock" - from the Mongolian root word for human being: "hu." You typically don't need to worry about pinching or pruning petchoas to keep them pretty, through you can if you'd like to encourage more compact growth. Slow-release fertilizers deliver a little bit of nutrients to the soil each time you water and you only need to apply them once a season. The soil should never stay wet or soggy, otherwise the roots could rot.įertilize petchoas regularly during the growing season or make it easy on yourself and use a slow-release fertilizer at planting time. Water them regularly to keep them from wilting - but take care not to overwater. In containers, choose a potting mix designed for use in pots. ![]() Like most flowering annuals (including petunias and calibrachoas, to which they're related), petchoas prefer moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter if you grow them in gardens. They can tolerate some partial shade, but they won't bloom as well and are more likely to get lanky, unattractive stems without enough sun. Grow petchoas in full sun (at least six to eight hours of direct light a day). ![]() ![]() Dunham is aware of the “Girls” renaissance. ![]() “Although in the end I hated everyone, I hated everyone because the writing was so good,” she said. She was frustrated by the show’s dearth of Black characters, but she thought it captured privileged white women pretty well. “I always heard, like, Lena Dunham being this problematic fave,” she said.īut when she saw a clip of the show on TikTok in which Shoshanna, played by Zosia Mamet, tears down the other women’s egos in a beach house, she decided to watch for the first time. She said she had skipped the show because she did not think it would speak to her, a college-age Black woman. Tameka Amado, 30, a consultant in Boston, had been wary of the show when it first aired because of some of these criticisms. “What are you trying to say? It’s not working.” “Like, the token Black character is a Republican,” she said, referring to a love interest of Hannah’s in the second season played by Donald Glover. Gray thinks are still worthy of scrutiny. “She was really ahead of her time there.”īut there are other aspects of the show that Ms. Dunham was “not even doing it as a body-positive statement, just kind of, ‘this is my body, this is a normal person’s body,’” she said. Gray said she saw it as radically neutral. Dunham’s nudity was often received with outrage or praise, but a decade later Ms. On her podcast, she revisited a Season 2 scene in which Hannah plays table tennis, naked, with a fling played by Patrick Wilson. Gray said, especially now that more shows, like “Insecure” and “Fleabag,” have gone on to feature women who do not have it all figured out. That “Girls” was such a lightning rod for criticism in its day makes it especially rich to discuss a decade later, Ms. In 2017, Vulture published a 1,500-word list of all of the show’s controversies. It cycled between phases of backlash and backlash-to-the-backlash over its nudity and sex scenes, its whiteness (and its creative team’s defenses of it), its characters’ narcissism and the statements, and often the body, of its creator, Ms. When the show was originally broadcast, it seemed to stir up much stronger feelings. “That’s kind of the beautiful thing about being in your 20s: It’s really the only time in your life when you’re able to do that,” she said. Badlotto rewatched the show and saw the exact same story line as a realistic demonstration of trial and error - an essential part of growing up. Badlotto watched the show for the first time, she said, she was frustrated when Hannah enrolled in and promptly abandoned an M.F.A. ![]() A series like “Girls,” which is about lost 20-somethings, could be comforting to 30-somethings who have weathered the chaos of those years, she said. Professor Russell said a primary reason we rewatch television - a practice she believes has gotten more popular in the last decade because of streaming and its endless options - is to appreciate how we have changed between viewings of a show that has remained the same. “This notion of ‘rewatching’ is a misnomer, because you’re re-introspecting,” said Cristel Antonia Russell, a professor of marketing at the Graziadio Business School at Pepperdine University, who does research on television consumption habits. The phrase “so real” peppers their text messages. ![]() They are revisiting plot lines like Hannah’s on-again, off-again relationship with Adam (Adam Driver) and her revolving cast of roommates. “It just resonates so much more now,” said Alix Seracki, 30, a photographer in Manhattan who is rewatching the show with four friends. But now well into their 30s, some of the millennials rewatching “Girls” are seeing their early adulthood with greater clarity. That was too much verisimilitude for some viewers. The show’s protagonists had just graduated into a recession and were grappling with the rise of apps like Instagram and Tinder, all while going through the typical turmoil of one’s 20s. It also, perhaps unwittingly, was a time capsule of what life was like for a privileged slice of New York City in the mid-2010s. Dunham’s character, Hannah, is cut off by her parents and then declares that she may be the voice - “or at least a voice” - of her generation. The show knowingly played into and poked fun at those clichés beginning with its first episode, in which Ms. “Girls” was released in 2012 amid a flurry of hot takes that argued millennials were the whiniest, laziest generation yet. “I like to call it a period piece,” said Julia Gray, 27, a journalist in Brooklyn and the host of “Girls Room,” a “Girls” rewatch podcast she created last year. (In Season 1, Marnie uses a Blackberry and Jessa has a flip phone.) Returning and first-time viewers are dissecting the show in bars and group chats, uploading supercuts to TikTok and using “Girls” to reflect on the very recent past. ![]() |
